Saltwater aquarium filters internal power?

I do not really want to buy an external cartridge filter for my saltwater aquarium. It is only 45 gallons high (3 'long, 2' high, 1 'wide). Can I use an internal power filter with a protein skimmer, sand live, and live rock to help filter? You should not require inside biological filtration, which is done by the live rock. To be honest the media in the filters of food should be discarded, as it only become a factory nutrients. But can be used to house some chemical means, such as carbon or rowaphos.
