Many people are confused by words in today's electronics industry as "rear-projection TV," "plasma" and "flat screen LCD. To understand exactly what you are buying when you purchase one of these items, you must first understand the underlying technology each.

Plasma TV: These televisions are almost always in the form of a flat panel, as they use a technology that allows manufacturers to house the necessary electronics in a flat panel.

A plasma TV screen operates very similar to a fluorescent lamp, which consists of two glass panels that contains xenon gas between them. The gas in the form of plasma, and then inject an electric charge is run through, causing it to illuminated in reds, blues and greens, creating an image. Each pixel is composed of red, blue and green phosphor.

Traditional CRT TVs, however, containing a vacuum tube, which emits an electric beam through the tube surface, lighting matches. That these screens are larger than the moderns.

Liquid Crystal Televisions

The LCD rear projection systems are not the same as LCD flat screen televisions, and rear projection LCD TVs create an image by projecting light through a transparent LCD chip, which consists of individual pixels showing moving video images, therefore the forward projection of the image through a lens that magnifies the image in a mirror, which finally reflects the image on the screen.

These televisions are also less expensive compared to plasma and LCD flat screen televisions, and also have more displays. LCD rear projection systems also provide brighter images and greater contrast.
